About Me

Having moved to Kuwait in the summer of 2005, I started up my own book club six months later. It has proven to be a wonderful journey of making new friends as well as sharing reading experiences with others who love to read. I hope to convey my thoughts, questions and ideas on the various books we read. I welcome your additions and thoughts on the books that I write about.
.
I am married with two lovely children, Yousef and Noor and we moved to Mangaf, Kuwait in 2006. Previously, we were living in London, where I was born and raised. I have always been an avid reader and this interest in books was probably a subconscious nudge for me towards academia. I am an Assistant Professor at a University in Kuwait, having taught previously at Portsmouth University and Kingston University. I recently had my own book published.
.
My husband is interested in photography and his most recent challenge from me is to take the photographs of the books I read for this blog.
.
If you live in Kuwait and would like to join our book club, please feel free to email me. We are always keen to welcome new members.
.
Thanks for reading.
.

The books you choose to read part of the book club sound interesting. Please let me know what book you have decided on for March so I can follow “anonomously”

Elaf – Hello
We are now reading the White Tiger by Aravind Adiga. I shall post my comments once I’ve finished it but so far I would surely recommend it to you. Pop into my office sometime and let me know how everything is going.

Elaf,
Unfortunately I’m not sure where you might be able to pick up a copy here in Kuwait. Most of us tend to get our books from abroad or through Amazon.com although I know there have been problems getting this one to be delivered here in Kuwait although I’m not sure why. I would start at Virgin in Marina…also ask Shobhita the head librararian at the Uni…always helpful. See you soon

Hi Um Yousef.
Cool site.
My better half has been asking me about a library in Kuwait…To date I could not locate one. Is yours a borrower’s library or do you have your own collection for yourself and friends only?
Best wishes,
Akbar

Hi Akbar, I don’t have a library of my own (though am seriously thinking that we need one). I run a book club for ladies and we tend to get our books from abroad, Europe, UK, USA etc. However, the British Ladies Society also have their own library (details below). Perhaps your wife might like to pop in and have a look around. She is also welcome to join our book club-we meet once a month after reading the chosen book for that month and then discuss it. If she would like more details, I’m happy for her to contact me directly. Thanks for visiting and hope you keep coming back
The BLS Library, at the BLS premises: Rumathyia Block 9, street 99 (on the corner of street 96), House 1, Basement level.
Library opening times vary. For more information, contact: library@theblskuwait.com
